Questions Answered

Pastor Steven Birnie

.

There are times when you look at a question such as this and think it’s an easy subject to define but in truth, it can be a little difficult to nail down a brief and easy meaning so tonight, I thought I might venture my best effort to describe what a Christian is and also what a Christian is not, for both our Christian readers and for those who might not necessarily believe in Jesus.
.
The life of a Christian centres itself around one particular event in history when Jesus, the son of God, cast off his heavenly role to come among men as flesh and blood and give himself as a sacrifice for the sins of mankind and satisfy God’s anger against sin. For life and forgiveness to come upon all men, God required a perfect sacrifice, someone who would live their life from their birth to their death in thought, word and deed without sin, and then willingly give himself as a sacrifice on mankind’s behalf. That sacrifice took the form of Jesus being put to trial and falsely accused by the religious of the day, beaten and tortured at the hands of the Romans and then nailed to a cross to die in agonising pain. Throughout this trial, beating and finally the cross, Jesus took God’s punishment of mankind’s sin, weaknesses and burdens on himself, allowing God to judge the perfect Jesus in man’s stead. Through this act, Jesus fulfilled God’s requirements fully allowing mankind the opportunity once again, to enter into fellowship with God through putting their trust in the Cross of Jesus Christ.
.
A Christian is one who has believed the above work of God through his son Jesus Christ and came to a place where they’d recognised their own sinful nature and their need to be saved from the consequence of sin, the judgement of God. Realising that mankind has no good within himself, an inability to live a holy life and having nothing to offer God, a Christian confessed their sins before God and asked for the Lord’s forgiveness trusting, that Jesus had indeed paid their penalty of sin allowing sinful men access to a Holy God. In this conversion experience, the Christian changed their mind from following after unfruitful works of the flesh and of the world, to taking a new direction in the righteousness of God. In this the Christian begins not a walk of rules and regulations but a real, maturing and daily relationship with a great, gracious and loving God, trusting him for all of their needs whether it be emotional, physical or even financial.
.
The above describes in brief, what every truly saved Christian has went through throughout the ages and throughout the world today regardless of race, colour or creed realising their own fallen condition with sorrow but coming alive in their new life with him. Christians realise that the only way to live now, is by God’s divine unmerited favour, his Grace, which a Christian receives just by putting their faith in Jesus Christ alone. Now, any who call upon the name of the Lord can be saved and have the promise of an eternity in heaven with him but it doesn’t end there. In this life, a Christian can enjoy all of the great benefits which accompany a relationship with God including a complete reconciliation with him, complete forgiveness of sins, adoption into the family of God, freedom from Law, life and liberty and an indwelling of his Spirit to help us truly live a life with him not to mention his unwavering help, support and wisdom in times of need in every area of the Christian life.
.
If you are one who doesn’t necessarily believe in Jesus the above might sound too good to be true and if that the case, then I direct your attention to the above sacrifice of Jesus Christ. God loved the world so much that he allowed his son to be falsely accused, put on trial and then murdered, all so he could do one thing, eliminate the sin so that he could indeed have true fellowship again with the mankind he created and loves with a passion and this means you too. He loves you with a passion today reader and his arms are always open to anyone, in any state or circumstance. There’s no sin too terrible that God wont forgive, there’s no situation he can’t fix and there’s no bondage in your life which he can’t remove whether it be the drink, drugs, sexual issues, you name it God can fix it so what do you need to do to be saved?
.
Just believe, put your faith in the Lord Jesus Christ and confess your sins before him and friend, he will meet you right where you are. Just go to a quiet room and close your eyes and speak to him, cry out to him, call upon him and I assure you, if you believe you are sinful in nature, if you believe he paid for those sins and that you want your life to change, then he will meet you. He’ll come into your heart and transform your life, he’ll be your God and I assure you again, he’ll never dominate you, manipulate you, or deceive you, he won’t force you, pester you or hurt you, you’ll never be alone again and you’ll have someone in your life, the only one in your life, who absolutely won’t let you down or throw in the towel and walk away from you.
.
If this message has spoken to you tonight then friend I pray you won’t hesitate, you can have peace, joy and happiness not from what the world offers but through your faith in the son of God and if this is a decision you want to make, then please don’t hesitate, don’t spend a minute longer in your old life. Please pray and if you do, attached yourself to a true church of born again, spirit filled believers who will take care of you and help you through, speak to the Pastor there and let him know what’s happened and they’ll take you on.
.
I’m aware of the limitations of a written article but I pray this message comes across in a way befitting our Lord Jesus Christ and hopefully, it’s answered the question of defining what a true Christian is.
.
God bless
