Easy Bible Guide Part 7

Pastor Steven Birnie

.

I hope you are enjoying our Easy Bible Guide Series so far and hopefully its building for you a clear and simple guide to interpreting the scriptures in Christ. God’s Word is just simply so vast and deep that it’s unlikely any will ever full comprehend it’s depth in this lifetime however today, through the revelation of the Holy Spirit, we can understand fully the most important revelations in God’s Word has to offer so we can experience God in our lives. This next portion is as important as the rest and hopefully this short article will add to the keys we’ve already laid to open up God’s Word more fully.

.

As you’ll have seen through the overview of the bible article, having a basic understanding of the main threads is essential to understanding the setting and age God was revealing throughout the Old and the New Testament scriptures to which we can now add more detail by examining the subject of knowing the books and the authors. Basically, every book in God’s Word was written either by a single individual, multiple authors or scribes who were writing the letters on behalf of another and even though each and every verse is God inspired, these books and authors have a tremendous impact on how we understand what is written. For example, when we take the accounts of the Gospels we find four different men writing and recording from four different angles yet the books themselves remain in perfect harmony. Each had their own setting, writers and recipients which help us greatly in understanding scripture.

.

A good example of many of knowing the author and the book is Paul’s second letter to his beloved son in the faith Timothy. Timothy at the time of writing was the presiding Apostle of the church in Ephesus and Paul wrote this letter to him from his imprisonment in Rome and at that point, Paul knew he would never leave his cell so, Paul wrote this final letter to his beloved son and passed it through an 18 inch hole in the ceiling so he might encourage Timothy to stand fast in the faith. The letter itself is very instructive but underneath you see such a warmth and concern for his young, timid Pastor with his massive responsibilities and dangers in the ministry. The book itself was basically Paul’s last will and testament and knowing Timothy, it would have been a very hard and tearful read indeed but it gave Timothy the instruction he needed to carry on and labour for Christ.

.

Using myself as an example, knowing the background, author and recipient of this book, is hugely important to me personally as a Pastor because both these books were written not to churches as such but an overseer of a church, so there is endless amounts of instruction for the Pastor to follow. When you read it from a Pastor’s point of view, you pick up on how warmly Paul spoke toward the Pastor and being God inspired, the warmth of God’s heart toward the Pastor but not only that you find instruction, doctrine and mindsets to follow so that you might serve God in a way which he approves. I can tell you now, doing things as instructed in Timothy has never let me down and the times I’ve not, haven’t worked out too well at all but God’s Word stands firm and you put all of your trust in it, every time.

.

Hopefully you can see from this brief article and my own short testimony how important it is to consider the book and the author when studying the scriptures as much error and wrong mindsets can arise when what God wants is to instruct and speak to his reader fully. My encouragement to a reader to get to know the author and the book is to use a good study bible which will contain commentaries and explanations of what’s being said and with most study bibles, you’ll find each book will begin with a brief overview of the historical setting, the authorship and who received the letter. When you build up a good knowledge of these backgrounds, it will deepen your own understanding of God to greater levels than before.
