Easy Bible Guide Part 2

Pastor Steven Birnie

.

The following brief teaching, is part of our 12 part Easy Bible Guide and follows on from the previous articles. Hopefully this message of studying the scriptures in the context of Book, Chapter and Verse, will continue to build up the picture of how to correctly and clearly interpret God’s Word.

.

The Word of God from start to finish is a complete history of two main peoples, The Children of Israel in the Old Testament and the Body of Christ, his Church, in the New Testament with the most important event ever to take place in the history of mankind in the middle, the sacrifice of God’s only Son. From Genesis to Revelations, we see the revelation of the creation of mankind, the separation of a people unto God with the promise of a Messiah to come, the coming of that Messiah and the predictions of the end times and contained within, is all the things which have been revealed to us about the Creator and Maker of Heaven and Earth, his dear son Jesus Christ and the ever present Holy Spirit of the Lord.
.

Contained within his Word to us, we see the changes which take place, promises fulfilled and judgements come to pass, as God takes us through the ages revealing to us with every passing year his plan for mankind and so far, he hasn’t been wrong. It’s these changes which we will focus on for this short teaching to illustrate the importance of reading God’s Word in context of the Book, Chapter and Verse of his Scriptures, so we might fully understand and correctly interpret the truths contained. One of the best illustrations we could use would be that of the changing role of Jesus throughout the New Testament Scriptures, to show how the Word moves on from season to season.
.

At the beginning of the Gospels, we find the a brief explanation of the birth and early life of Jesus as he began his time here as flesh and

blood and at the age of around 30, we find him baptised, confirmed by God and set forward on his 3 year ministry. The Gospels then take us through that ministry, as Jesus preached and taught the Kingdom of Heaven to all that would hear by the guiding hand of God which would eventually lead up to his death, burial, resurrection and a reappearance to his disciples, as the risen Lord. Jesus. Jesus then went on to build his Church through his Apostles, beginning with the early history detailed in Acts, the conclusive teachings we find in the Epistles and then, the teaching of End Times to the Apostle John, giving us the book of Revelations.

.

In revelations and confirmed throughout the Old Testament, Gospels and Epistles Jesus speaks of the things to come, his return for his church, a seven year feast and his eventual return to reign as King for 1000 years after which, the final Judgement will come and the Eternal Heaven will begin. Hopefully you can see from this brief overview just how much the role of Jesus Christ has changed, grown and moved on over the course of history and in his Word. We see him in the Gospels where he performed his earthly ministry and that ministry came to a close as he took up again his rightful place at the right hand of God to draw people to himself and build his church. We see that this role will indeed come to an end for a time when he comes back for his church, it will change again when he returns to reign on earth for 1000 years and that role will eventually come to a close, when the promises of history fulfill themselves and the Eternal existence will being.
.

So when we interpret the scriptures for ourselves we need to be fully aware of the context and season it is explaining and one of the best and well known examples would be that of the Church Deacon. In the Acts of the Apostles Chapter Six, we find a new role enter the early Church in the form of servants, to undertake labours and free up the Apostles to preach and minister in the Word. Back then, there were only 3 requirements for a Church Deacon however, in the Book of Timothy, we find the Deacon role had grown with many new requirements and a full blown ministry in itself. The example in Acts was the beginning of the teaching, the Book of Timothy was the conclusive teaching and put together, along with various other scriptures, gives us as complete a teaching as possible about the Christian Church Deacon.
.
Hopefully it can be seen by this very brief example just how important it is to study a teaching in the context of Book and Chapter to avoid error and an incomplete teaching, the example shows that if one was to use the Acts Chapter Six Deacon alone, it would be a in-accurate and incomplete teaching leading to much error and confusion. When we take the scriptures in context, along with the other teachings on this Easy Bible Guide, we can learn quickly how to formulate a solid teaching in the Lord.
.
We’ve included an example of a very good Bible DVD Box Set from Time Life, which takes some of the more major accounts of the scriptures onto the big screen. This is a Box Set which we’ve watched personally and we’d recommend it as a scripture study aid, for those who prefer a more visual teaching. Please be aware that there are some ‘adult scenes’ and although they’re very mild,  we’d advise parents to check for suitability.
