This is an excellent question to answer as many are confused about this subject however, there is quite a simple explanation. Traditionally, Christian Churches meet on a Sunday which would be the correct day to assemble ourselves and most would look upon this as the Sabbath but this is where a little confusion sets in.  You see the day of rest was originally the seventh day of creation where God rested from all of his works and in the Old Testament, the Jews would observe the seventh day as their day of rest however, the seventh day in Jewish tradition is actually a Saturday. Sunday would be the first day of the week.

.

So under the old covenant, God required no work on that day, that no one should pick up a tool and no serving would be done, it

would be kept Holy and restful as a reminder that God rested from his works on the seventh day.  In the New Covenant, all of God’s Laws had been fulfilled by Jesus on the Cross and Jesus is our eternal rest every day, he paid our penalty, he took our transgressions upon himself, he bore our sickness and our griefs, the chastisement of our peace was upon him – Jesus is our rest. The Sabbath was only ever a foreshadow of the great rest to come and those who believe in Jesus Christ have an eternal Sabbath in him.

.

So hopefully you see so far that the original Sabbath was indeed a Saturday so should we meet on a Saturday as a Christian? Again if we turn to the scriptures there’s always an answer…

.

(1Co 16:1) “… Now concerning the collection for the saints, as I have given order to the churches of Galatia, even so do ye

1Co 16:2 Upon the first day of the week let every one of you lay by him in store, as God hath prospered him, that there be no gatherings when I come….”

.

Paul gave a precept concerning the collection of the Saints which he had instituted throughout the New Testament Church for us to meet on the first day of the week, Sunday. This has been the traditional day of meeting, worshipping and fellowship for a long time however hopefully, Sunday isn’t the only day we meet brothers and sisters! Again we live as Christians 24/7 and each day should be a new day in the Lord. As for the day of rest, well God created us, he knows us and knows we need rest and taking a day of rest, is without doubt some of the best advice God could give to us concerning our physical and emotional health.

.

Many overlook some of the Old Testament teachings when much of it is just common sense and more than that, the advice of our creator. We need our physical rest friends, our body needs to sleep for one third of our day and for the Christian, well I believe taking a day aside each week, putting everything aside for just one day and relaxing, whether that be playing with the kids, working out in your garage on a project or spending a full day in prayer, would do us the world of Good.

.

God bless and I hope this has been a simple answer to this question.
