Does Jesus still physically heal people of illness today or did that end with the early church?

.

This is an excellent question to answer and one which is a good subject for our Friday Night Article because not only do I get to share God’s Word on the subject and a testimony, but it’s also a chance to give Jesus some real glory for the great Saviour he is, so I hope you enjoy this article tonight as part of our Questions Answered Series.

.

I was blessed to grow up in a largely Godly family and subjects like the question of Jesus healing today were never really a doubt of mine growing up, the stories I was told as well events which took place just reinforced that belief and it’s something I’ve lived with ever since. Stories like when a visiting preacher came to our area and held a meeting to which around a hundred people turned up, during the meeting, a man was there who believe it or not had no knees and this man came forward for healing and by the laying on of hands, his knees grew back in right before everyone eyes!

.

Thankfully, I haven’t had to just rely on the things I’ve heard but also the things I’ve seen personally throughout my Christian life, I’ve seen people healed of some serious stuff and I’ve had the honour of God healing individuals through my own prayers but the one’s that have stuck out the most, have been the one’s a little closer to home.  Over the past ten years my wife Sharon has had three major health issues despite being a very healthy individual and it was during those times when I needed God to intervene the most.  Once, Sharon got diagnosed with a pelvic disorder and that might sound a little trivial but what lay in store was a lot of pain and discomfort so as her husband, I turned to God and asked him for help.  He duly responded and his clear instruction was to call upon the Elders of the Church. That Sunday, I asked those trusted, experienced Elders and friends I might add, if they’d lay hands on Sharon which they did and in the weeks to follow, all the signs of the disorder left and the medication she was going to have to take was no longer needed.

.

Now, if you’re reading this and thinking it could have went away by itself then let me share another personal experience.  A couple of years later Sharon went for a scan and as it turned out, she had a tennis ball sized growth in her stomach area and when it was discovered, it was a real shock for us both.  The doctor asked if we’d come back in the following week for more tests and another scan which we agreed to but again, it was time to seek God in prayer and that Sunday, I knew the instruction again to call upon the Elders so we set Sharon forward for prayer believing in Jesus that he’d come through for us again and intervene in our lives.  In the week, Sharon went to her appointment and again the doctors took the scan and low and behold, the growth had completely vanished.

.

One of the great things about this instance was the fact there was that all important Doctor evidence, not to mention the dated scan photos, that we could share as a testimony of the mercy and compassion of Jesus in our lives and not only that, it gave us the knowledge that God was indeed with us.  That was the real outcome for us personally, as a husband, there was nothing I could do for my wife, no way I could protect her, all I could do was turn to my God and ask him to do what I couldn’t, heal my wife.  He did and we’re so grateful he did and I hope these short accounts, give great examples of the fact that Jesus does still heal today.

.

Like I said before, these instances are not uncommon in the Christian life and are actually well explained within God’s Word beginning with Jesus himself in the Gospels.  In Matthew 8:16-17 “…..and Jesus healed all that were sick that it might be fulfilled by the Prophet Isaiah saying. Himself he took on our infirmities and bore our sicknesses….”. The verse Mathew was referring to was Isaiah 53:4 “….surely he has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows….”. (The word griefs in the original text is bodily sickness).  You see Jesus came to not only make it possible for men to be forgiven of sins and have the promise of eternal life through the cross, but that he’d actually take on the sickness and diseases of the world making it possible that man could be physically healed.

.

It didn’t just end with Jesus either, he gave his disciples and followers power over unclean spirits and diseases to accompany their message that the Messiah had come and to repent of their Dead Works and it didn’t just end there.  When Jesus ascended to Heaven, the Holy Spirit came upon the Church to not only empower the Church but to design it in a specific way in the form of a Body and in that Body, Jesus had made room for the Ministry of Healing (1 Corinthians 12 ) to be powerful force in his Church. This brings me back me back to our experiences, calling upon the Elders of his Church to heal Sharon and intervene in our lives.

.

These instances of calling upon the Elders of the Church is by no means the only way Jesus heals today but hopefully these examples are enough to help with this very important question.

.

This article is based specifically on the subject of whether Jesus still heals today and is not intended to upset anyone who struggles with illness in their Christian lives. If you are a Christian who has never received a healing or feel disappointed in God as a result, please read the article dealing with my own physical issues. God bless and don’t worry, God has it in hand…..

God bless
