There are many views in various denominations on what the Christian confirmation entails as a ceremony or a rite, some feel it’s a ceremony to confirm an individual to a Church or assembly and others see it as a rite for someone who comes of age, so it can be difficult to pin down a true meaning on the subject. So, laying aside the traditional thoughts of confirmation, we can examine what a true New Testament confirmation actually is, so we can understand how profoundly important it is in the assembly and most of all, for the individual Christian.
.
Our true view of what we’d term as a confirmation, would be when an individual makes a decision to be baptised with water in a public manner, to confess their own attachment to Jesus Christ as their Lord, Saviour and best friend. The baptism of water is simply an outward act of something which has already occurred within, when an individual truly repents and puts their faith in Jesus, they are immediately baptised into Christ by their faith and confession, meaning the death and burial of the old man and a resurrection into a new man shown in the act of being fully immersed in water. This would be the Christian’s public confirmation of their faith in Jesus Christ and attachment to his true Church, his body.
.
The above would be what the New Testament in Christ would teach, Jesus was baptised, he taught his Apostles to baptise and the full immersion in water was practiced throughout the early church as an example for us today and it is, fundamentally important to the individual and to the assembly. To the individual, this is an extremely special time for them in their life as a Christian, fulfilling the second of the three New Testament baptisms and for them, it can be an extremely joyful and reassuring moment, confirming to their own heart their commitment to Jesus Christ.
.
To the wider assembly well, for all the worship nights, meetings and conferences I’ve ever attended, nothing has come quite close to the sense of the Lord Spirit during a baptismal service and I’ve no doubt there’s a celebration in Heaven when one steps forward to publicly confess their faith. It’s just a wonderful time to be a part of and the times when I’ve been given the honour to hold a meeting like this, well there nothing quite like it. The sense of family is strong and if the individual being baptised is one who has had a harsh history of family, much can be healed through an assembly welcoming a person into the fold, it can be just spectacular.
.
The true confirmation and the surrounding events of baptism is a tremendously important time because in general, it begins a path for an individual for the rest of their lives and the baptism should be something quite special to look back upon. This is why it’s the responsibility of the oversight of an assembly to ensure the individual is entering into the baptism for all the right reasons and with the correct frame of mind. Hopefully this brief article answers the questions you have about the Christian Confirmation.
