“…Due to the consideration of the feelings of those who have been affected by the abortion issue, I have closed comments on this article as you might appreciate, to avoid any hurtful comments to our readers…”
.
This subject is another article which I’ve spent much time debating as to whether or not to upload on our Blog Page due to the seriousness of the issue and in addition, I’ve always found articles and text to be a little limited rather than a face to face conversation. In light of this, I just pray a reader will pick up on my compassionate tone and consider the following in a balanced manner because it’s a subject which will arise in Christian circles and it’s one, for the sake of the individuals involved, where we need to be clear in our understanding, so that we may teach and more importantly, help effectively.
.
Abortion has been a practice for many centuries using various earlier methods including drinking herbal tonics, sitting on boiling water and wrapping material tightly around the waist, even in Scotland there were physicians and elderly women who used crude hooked sticks and twigs to terminate a pregnancy. Abortion has been common for many years and various countries have had their own laws and guidelines governing the issue, some are strictly anti-abortion and others have a pro-abortion view. In the western world, abortion is now a very common practice and in the US alone, there were 400,000 unwanted pregnancies with 200,000 in the UK over the course of 2013. Some of those statistics were multiple, in that there were case of individuals having 4 abortions before they’d finished their teens and fortunately, governments are now beginning to re-assess just how easy it is these days to terminate a pregnancy due to the abuse of the law. With these statistics there inevitably arises a fierce set of opposing opinions which mainly centre around the question of, when is a child a human being?. Again, there are various views on the event including the moment of conception, when the heart begins to beat as well as some who say ‘not until they are born’, so as a Christian, what would be our view in the light of scriptures?
.
Well firstly we need to define how a human being is made up so to keep it simple, the Word tells us that man is a triune being and it was so since creation. God formed man from the dust of the earth (body), blew in his nostrils the breath of life (spirit) and man became a living soul (soul). This is further confirmed in the Book of Thessalonians – “…whole spirit, whole soul and whole body…”. So a human is made up of three distinct elements which function together to make it a ‘human-being’ and when a child is conceived, life begins where not just a physical aspect has taken place, but the creation of a new soul and a new spirit making up the individual. One of the greatest illustrations of this soul awareness in the womb is a passage in scripture where Elizabeth, pregnant with John the Baptist, meets Mary who tells her of the child Jesus to which Elizabeth responded – “…for lo, as soon as the voice of your (Mary) salutation (about Jesus) sounded in my ears, the babe leaped in my womb for joy…” There can be no real doubt for the Christian given the clarity of God’s Word, that a child in the womb is very much a person with a spirit, soul and a growing body, so if a pregnancy is terminated, then child does die.
.
I feel it’s important at this point before I continue, to clarify the difference between an abortion for no other reason than it’s unwanted to an abortion due to an extreme medical issue as there are many cases, where doctors and specialist have to make terrible decisions based on the danger to a mother and in these cases, terminating the pregnancy can be the only option. It’s one of those situations I feel is unthinkable, for a medical team to decide and infinitely worse for a parent, so I hope and pray so if you were to ask the question, what would God think, then I can absolutely tell you with no doubt, that God would never judge you in that situation. God gave some men and women the gift and authority to be doctors and sometimes doctors have to make terrible decisions, so please never feel God would condemn you under these circumstances and I pray this article will encourage you personally.
.
It seems at this point in the article there’s little doubt as to the clarity of the answer and you might ask how could we draw any positive from an abortion issue yet with God, there is always light, even in the darkest of places. You see in our minds we tend to think of death as a cessation of life, that when you die it’s like the lights go out however, not so in God and his Word. When a person is conceived, they are given their own spirit and their own soul and this aspect of them can never die, their physical body might go to the ground but an individual’s soul was created to be eternal, in that when the body gives up that soul will either go to heaven for the saved or go to hell for the unsaved. The soul when created cannot simply cease to exist whether a life ends in the womb or out in the physical world, it has to go somewhere and in the case of unborn children, they go straight to glory with the Father in Heaven.
.
When Jesus said to the thief on the cross that ‘today, you will be with me in paradise’, that meant that day, the thief’s body might have went to the grave just like Jesus’ body, but the soul cannot suddenly cease to exist. In the case of thief, he met his maker that day, having repented of his sins on the cross giving him full access to eternal life. In the case of the innocent unborn child, their path is straight to the throne of God and into his very hands. The scriptures assure us of this fact and for any who might read this article I pray, that you take absolute and total heart at the destination of these unborn children as it is the only piece of light we can take comfort in.
.
This has been another very difficult article to write and again I spent much time deciding as to whether to include it in our blog page yet, it’s such a widespread issue affecting so many individuals that the subject needs to be made mention of. It’s a tough one and my dearest hope is that those affected by abortion would find encouragement from this article not for what I’ve said or viewpoints I’ve put across, but from the assurance we have in God and from God’s Word confirming to us the truth of even the most difficult of situations. My primary reason for writing this article has been to encourage those who deeply regret their actions but to also warn others of the truth and consequence of terminating an unwanted pregnancy, a child is a living soul and aside from doctors with no alternative, no one has the right, not even a parent, to end a child’s life.
.
If you are one reading this today and you deeply regret having had an abortion then please let me assure you today, God will forgive you. As human beings we tend to rank sin in our minds with some sins being lesser than others yet God ranks sin in no way shape or form, sin is sin and Jesus died for those sins and let me tell you, if he forgave me my terrible sins, then he will forgive you. I pray you will benefit from this article and give you the reassurance and peace.
.
God bless
